PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
This programme is offered to learners who have completed a Major Award in Early Childhood Care and Education at QQI Level 5. The purpose of this award is to enable the learner to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work as an autonomous practitioner to lead and coordinate the provision of a quality early childhood care and education environment which promotes children’s well-being, development and learning.

Graduates from this Award may gain employment in the following areas:
- Crèches
- Playgroups
- Preschools
- Special Needs Assistants
Graduates can also progress to Degree programmes in Higher Education Institutions. Students who gain all distinctions may be eligible to apply, for example, to Year 2 of the BA in Early Childhood Care and Education (Mary Immaculate College) and/or Early Childhood Studies (University College Cork).
I started my journey in Central College Limerick (CCL) just over two years ago. I began the Level 5 Early Childhood Care and Education course and continued into Level 6, CCL has given me a strong foundation in the childcare sector which motivated me to continue my studies in Mary Immaculate College where I am currently studying the Level 8 Degree in Early Childhood Care and Education. Because I did Level 5 & 6 in ECCE I was able to go straight into the second year of the course in Mary Immaculate. This was based on an interview and a short written exam. I was well prepared due to all the course work that we had covered in CCL. For future students I would highly recommend continuing onto Mary Immaculate College, as you don’t feel thrown into the deep end. It has given me more opportunities and options to work within the childcare sector. This was only possible due to the time, effort and preparation from the tutors. I would like to thank them for all they have done.
